Meet the game! Ok yea, another prototype..

admin | June 7, 2010

Untitled-116

Well, now we begin to roll. 8-)

You can finally try the first version of the latest prototype of the Sea Shepherd advergame.

As my original concept dictated, the game will be a side scroller, with focus on the navigation aspects across iceberg mazes, and highlights in fast paced zodiac pursuits.

At this initial stage, you can try the feel of navigating the Steve Irwin vessel across what should resemble a very ruff iceberg field.. :D

I tried to balance realism in the dynamics with certain more unrealistic elements, such as exagerated buoyancy, excessive speed and manouevre capabilities etc.

The game should have a high level of realism, yeah, but I also want it to be fun and entertaining for a casual gamer.

My favourite quote.. ‘Inaccurate, but it will blow your fucking mind..!’

So, in the hope of blowing some fucking mind up, here the link to the prototype.

The more feedback you give me, the more chances to see the issues solved in the next version..!

    Great 3D visuals

    I’m playing it right now and it has that ’I wanna play more’ to it, that a game should have.

    Great game play, not to easy not to hard

    Okay, now I can manouevre – feels great! The element of the excessive speed, works for me :) I still get stressed because of the limited view, but that could be a good level parametre.
    I think you have made something interesting and eventhough you say it is a prototype – which it is :) I spot your talent and I am looking forward to work with you on our project ;)

    @sipland

    Ahh, the first relief feeling! :D Very glad you liked the graphics, and even more that you liked the “feel”..!
    This was the “boring prototype”, the mysterious slow paced controlled navigation one.. I’m really looking forward to start working on the fast paced aspects of the game.. :)

    @winnie

    You can manouevre?! That’s a personal success by itself! :D
    In the flash version of the Whale Defense Response concept I actually felt the manouevrability as a big problem for players, so i guess this is great news! :)

    Thanks for the feedback compañeros, more fuel to keep the flame alive! B)

    I think I fell off the edge of the world, game could use a sky damage effects (I know that is difficult but it would be great) more accurate propulsion (you can be up on ice with the prop out of the water and still go) and splashing. regardless the game is great :)

    @Zeke

    Good points here..! ;)
    The possibility of falling off the “edge of the world” is just my personal challenge to modern scientific theories about the shape of the planet. If you remember, even Galileo Galilei admitted (at last!) that he was wrong, and that the earth is flat.
    Or maybe I could use it as a promotion for the “At the edge of the world” documentary that just came out..

    :D

    Nah..
    I think i will limit the movements of the vessels with an appropriate level design, such as limited paths across iceberg fields etc.
    The waypoints implemented in the radar also will hint towards which direction the player is supposed to go.
    But true, I could also implement a function that “corrects” the player’s manouevres, if something goes wrong.. ;)

    As for the propulsion, things are going to be easier to manage as soon as i code the “collision management” part. Right now the vessel can navigate over certain icebergs because i made them using simple spheric colliders, as a fast way to set it up. Having more accurate colliders should prevent the vessel from climbing the edges of the obstacles, resulting in a more realistic collision.

    What do you mean as sky damage effects? :)

    It’s going to get interesting soon! :D

    hello there , firstly i am surprised when i see your sea-wave effect :) that really looks great.. Would you provide me some info for making that effect ?

    @eren

    Wué! Glad you liked it, here some info for ya! ;)

    The application is built using the Unity game engine (http://unity3d.com/).

    As for the water, there are different possible implementations that look really great, and that are easily embeddable according to your necessities. I would suggest you starting from the standard Water matherials that come with the engine, and see if you are satisfied with them (http://unity3d.com/support/documentation/Manual/HOWTO-Water.html).

    Not enough? Google is full of scripts and shaders, usually of higher complexity, but that grant you more fancy effects. (As for one, the Infinite Ocean package.. http://www.nikko3d.com/index.php/ocean3d/45/ )

    As for the buoyant movement of the ship I used a script that you can download from http://forum.unity3d.com/viewtopic.php?t=33588 (“Buoyancy.unitypackage.zip”)

    I hope you got the info you’re looking for! ;)

    Hej Devin!
    Unfortunately I stopped working on this prototype, as it was requiring more time than what I was ready to invest for the cause.
    I agree with you on how cool it would be to have the whole fleet available! One should also consider though that this could be nice for people already informed on the issue, and not necessarily add anything new to the experience for people not able to recognize the vessels.
    They could even be used as unlockable awards, for example by granting the possibility to sail different vessels according to your progressive score.. Imagine a ranking system that makes you progressively get access to the different ships :-)

    Anyway, glad you liked it!

    awe, thats to bad and yah i like ur idea, and adding on they could select the ship they want to use when they unlock it thanks i was wondering can i see your steve irwin model to my email if you have it?

    Sure you can! I’ll make sure to send you the model by tomorrow.. Any preference about the file format?
    I can also put you in contact with a guy that built both the Yushin Maru and the Nisshin Maru, if you are interested ;) However, it’s his work, so you may want to discuss with him whether you are allowed to use his models or not :)
