Weapons showoff

admin | December 16, 2009

The weapons are finally coded. Now it’s just a matter of tuning them to make them usable..

From the zodiac the player will have three available strategies to harass the whaling vessels (according to the level):

  • Photocamera. Get near to particular spots of the vessels (harpoons, etc) and take a picture to expose the whaling methods.
  • Bottles of butyric acid. A limited number of bottles to be thrown on particular areas of the vessels.
  • Prop fouler. People seem to run slower if you cut their legs off. Shutting down the propeller will do too..

You can finally try this version of the game here: Whatever you do DO NOT CLICK ME.

It would be great if you could spend a minute to reply to the following questions regarding the gameplay..

  1. How do you feel the movement of the zodiac? is it “boat like” enough? is it hard to control? Why?
  2. Press 1, the camera will be activated. Try to take pictures to the harpoon of the vessel: Do you get how the camera works? Any suggestion?
  3. Press 2, and you will enter in “bottle launching” mode. Try to throw some bottles on the harpoon area. Impressions? Do you get how to throw bottles at different distances? Why do you think sometimes the target is red and sometimes is green?
  4. I’m still tuning the Prop Fouler, but you can already try it by pressing 3. When you deploy a propfouler the infobar will tell you if you succeeded or not: Are you able to deploy it properly in a limited amount of tries? How realistic do you feel it to be?
  5. Anybody experiencing lag?

    1) Its fine, I like how when you pull up along side the ship the water cannon stops you from gaining any speed.

    2) Took me awhile to figure out that you can only take pics of the bow, I got 1/3 shots. The oepration of it is fine, maybe place a shot instruction board before you press play that should solve operational control problems.

    3) I got 0/5 shots of rotten butter…. lol I understand the green and the red, but no luck on doing it, nor do I know how to launch them at different distances. I tried 3 times now, not one hit lol.

    4) Well I managed to prop foul it, comes with practice, I finally figured out the touch to it is to get close to the bow as possible. Once again short instructions on how to prop foul should solve any confusion. Much like I said in point 2.

    5) no lag as far as i can tell, and I got Australian internet, the worse kind! lol

Also any reason why in night mode the Yushin Maru is yellow?

Haha! the yellow Yushin Maru is just a very very fast representation of the Nishin Maru.. A bit yellowish and here ye go! :D

Nah, I still didn’t draw the NM, that’s why ;)

To launch the bottles: Charge the “power bar” by presssing the mouse, and then when you release it launches the bottle. If you just click it will launch at power “0″.. ;)
Good idea the instruction screen, I think i may put multiple interlevel screen, introducing a new weapon for every level..! :)

Ok man, thanks for the feedback! :D ..and it’s a relief to hear about the absence of lag on Australian crappy lines! :D

Question: When you were trying to prop foul the vessels, did you use drag the throttle up and down with the mouse, or did you just use the keyboard keys? I personally think the zodiac is much more controllable in the first case, but it looks like people don’t actually use it so much :) ..what about you? :)

I use the keyboard “w” and “S” now due to mouse being used for camera and bottles.

Here is a idea for ya, anyway to make the throttle the scrolling wheel on mouse? not sure if that make it any better or not….

Ok, i meant if you use the mouse while deploying the prop fouler ;)

Btw, using the mouse wheel could be a limitation for people that’s playing from a laptop, but it’s a great idea as a secondary control mode!
True, it would allow you to change speed easily while aiming..

I’ll set it up in the next prototype! ;)

Well, thanks for the feedback man! :-)
